Pericles's Funeral Oration
Aim & Process
⚡️ Aim: This is an initiative to stage the timeless drama “Pericles’ Funeral Oration”. It is based on the relevant part of the history book Peloponnesian War of the ancient Greek historian Thucydides and covers Pericles’ speech in 430 BC to honor the first victims in Athens of the War that took place between 431 and 404 BC. The speech focuses on praising Athens’ Democracy and freedom. The play will be presented by professional actors in Thessaloniki. After the performance, a vivid discussion with the audience will take place focused on the meanings of the play, the significance of the upcoming European elections, the common European challenges, and the need for a more united Europe.
👯♀️ Target group: The city: Thessaloniki. With a population of over a million, Thessaloniki is Greece’s second-largest city, home to the country’s second largest export and transit port, and the nearest European Union port to the Balkans and Black Sea zone. Thessaloniki has the largest youth population of any city in Greece since it hosts approximately 150,000 students each year through four public academic institutions. The city was awarded the title European Youth Capital in 2014. At least 10 municipalities form the metropolitan area of the city of Thessaloniki. Undoubtedly, this is an area where Volt should expand its influence and political standing.
🙏 Collaboration:
✔ KPIs: 1) We aim to promote Volt Greece’s presence in the city of Thessaloniki in an innovative-alternative way, far from the current approaches of the other political parties, 2) we plan to promote democracy, the ongoing necessity of citizen engagement in the commons (considering that only around 50% of voters participated in the most recent national elections), and 3) share Volt’s political vision for citizenship empowerment under the lens of the European elections 2024.
