Digital Democracy in Action

Aim & process

⚡️ Aim: This event marks a step forward in activating involvement in digital topics and advancing Volt’s Digitalisation Community.

👯‍♀️ Target group: Volt members interested in Digitalisation, non-volt members interested in digitalisation that might be interested in Volt, Volt members not knowledgeable about digitalisation that want to learn more. Also, people who want to get to know lead candidates for the European Elections and people who want to get to know current Volt elected officials and what they’re up to.

🤝 Collaboration

  1. Protecting our digital privacy, e.g. against ChatControl and Spyware, and dealing with AI in law enforcement with Sophie in ‘t Veld.
  2. Fighting online dis/misinformation, increasing trust in the election, and the impact of the Digital Impact Services Act with Rayna Stamboliyska.
  3. Increasing digital sovereignty, the impact of the Digital Markets Act, and the effect of new digital technologies on the economy with Sacha Muller.
  4. Inclusive digital services, the digital capabilities of governments, and best practices of local Volt representatives with Erik Kemp.

KPIs: 1) We want to engage existing members interested in digital topics in order to join the EUR digitalisation community and take an active role in shaping Volt’s digital policies and infrastructure, 2) For the speaking lead candidates and elected officials, the event is going to be an opportunity to share their ideas and visions of the field, as well as sharing their past work and successes (in case of elected officials), demonstrating that Volt is a party that already actively pushes forward the field wherever we have elected officials, and 3) as an indirect impact, we’re looking to trial open source technologies (rather than proprietary and privacy-violating solutions) for the event, so that Volt can start practicing what we preach when it comes to the open source of Volt’s technology stack.

Evaluation and learnings

Attendance
📊 17.5% of registrations came from non-Volt members. Registered Volta were part of the following chapters: NL (43%), BE (37%), DE (16%), UA, RO, FR, IE (3% each).
👍 Brought together an international Volt audience interested in digitalisation.
⚠️ Struggled to reach non-members.
➡️ Recommendations: Start advertising through local social media channels earlier and more often, consider advertising on local event platforms.

Livestream and Recordings
✔️ Appreciation for the ability to follow along at home and actively participate in the debates.
⚠️ Ongoing audio issues severed the remote viewing experience and made it impractical to process the recordings into a podcast.
➡️ Recommendations: do a sound check with every speaker, have a person monitoring the stream with headphones continuously, have a person act as messenger between the online chat and the people in the room.

Ticketing
💶 Voluntary ticket prices with sensible defaults encouraged people to donate to the event while allowing everyone – no matter their financial situation – to attend. Some people generously opted to donate more than the default value of 10€.
🎟️ The open source solution pretix proved itself as a low-cost, powerful but no-fuss solution to ticketing that didn’t get in the way of the organisers or attendees.
